Retirement income has to do more than look attractive today: the payment needs a real history, the current yield needs to stay within a credible range, and the fund needs enough resilience that one difficult year does not immediately undermine the plan. This page applies those guardrails before ranking the survivors by safety-adjusted yield.

This is a research shortlist, not a recommendation or a complete retirement portfolio. It deliberately excludes newer and structurally aggressive products, but it does not test whether any fund fits your spending needs, taxes, time horizon, asset allocation, or tolerance for loss. Use the table to find candidates, then compare their holdings, strategy, fees, and total return before making a decision.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an ETF a retirement-income candidate here?

It must yield 3% to 10%, have at least five years of distribution history without a payment gap, hold a proven Distribution Safety Score of 70 or higher, avoid a material recent payout cut, and stay within the screen's drawdown guardrail. 60 funds currently clear every rule.

Is this a list of the best ETFs for every retiree?

No. It is a research shortlist, not personalized advice or a model portfolio. A fund can pass every rule and still be wrong for your taxes, withdrawal rate, time horizon, asset allocation, or tolerance for loss.

Why cap the distribution rate at 10%?

An unusually high payout can reflect option premium, leverage, return of capital, or a market price anticipating a cut. The cap keeps this general-purpose shortlist from being dominated by the most aggressive income products; those remain available in the broader income lists.

Why require five years of uninterrupted payments?

Retirement plans depend on repeatability. Five years gives the screen evidence across more than a few distribution cycles and prevents a newly launched fund with a provisional record from ranking beside an established payer.

How should I use this list?

Start with the candidates, then inspect portfolio role, holdings, credit and equity exposure, expense ratio, distribution composition, total return, and overlap with what you already own. A retirement portfolio normally needs diversification beyond any single ranked list.

How often is the list updated?

Yield, distribution history, payout change, drawdown, and Safety Scores refresh from the data pipeline on every build, so membership and ranking update automatically.
